Reopening a Neglected Pool

A pool that's been neglected for months is a different project than a routine spring opening, and treating it the same way usually wastes chemicals and time. Gleannloch Farms routes pool and backyard plans through its HOA architectural review, and golf-course-adjacent lots there need drainage planned so runoff moves correctly relative to the course, both addressed in the design step.

Whether from a vacant property, a long absence, or simply falling behind, a badly neglected pool needs a slower, staged approach rather than a single aggressive shock.

  1. Assess before treating

Check water clarity, debris load, and whether the water is green, black, or just cloudy; a heavily neglected pool often needs mechanical debris removal (netting, vacuuming) before chemistry work does anything useful.

  2. Get the pump and filter running first

Circulation has to work before chemical treatment can distribute evenly; clear and clean baskets and check the filter before dosing anything.

  3. Shock in stages, not all at once

A severely neglected pool often needs multiple shock treatments over several days rather than one large dose, since a single dose can get consumed almost immediately by the existing algae and organic load.

  4. Expect to backwash or clean the filter repeatedly

A filter clearing months of neglect gets overwhelmed fast; plan on cleaning it more than once during the recovery process, not just at the end.

  5. Call for an equipment check if anything sat unused

Pumps, heaters, and salt cells that sat idle for months are worth inspecting before assuming they'll just turn back on and work correctly; a repair visit upfront can catch a problem before it causes bigger damage mid-recovery.
